I remember when a website had two audiences, two and that was that: the people who read it and the Google that ranks it. It was a simpler landscape. We knew who we were trying to please, and we knew where to push. Today there is a third, growing fast: the artificial intelligence models (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude) that read it, understand it and decide whether to recommend it in their answers. Nobody asked them for an opinion. They have one anyway, and your customers are asking. Am I wrong?

An AI-ready website works flawlessly for all three. Not three sites, one. Let’s look at how I approach it.

Let’s start with the foundations

I know, you would rather we started somewhere more exciting. Fair enough, but none of what follows matters if the site is slow or technically broken. Bolt on all the clever features you like; if the foundations creak, so does the house, and the house could not care less how expensive the chandelier was. An AI-ready website starts with fast loading, clean code, proper structure and flawless mobile operation. These are the foundations that let crawlers (human or machine) read the content without obstacles. Boring? Possibly. Essential? Absolutely.

Machines don’t read the way we do

Artificial intelligence models don’t read a site the way a human does. They don’t linger on your hero image, and your animation leaves them cold. No model has ever sat down with a coffee to admire your homepage, however nicely it turned out. They look for clean, structured information: clear titles, logical hierarchy, answers to specific questions. When content is organized this way, an answer engine can easily identify “what this business does”, “where it is” and “why I should recommend it”. When it isn’t, it moves on. No drama, no explanation, no second look.

Structured data is the language they speak

Schema markup (structured data) is how you tell machines and search engines, in their own language, who you are, what you offer, where you are and what makes you trustworthy. Think of it as the difference between mumbling in a foreign country and actually speaking the language. An AI-ready website has properly structured data for its business, people, services and products. Without it, the machine guesses. With it, it knows. And guessing is a lovely game until your order rides on it…

From ranking on Google to being the answer

SEO brings you into Google’s results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes you appear within the answers generated by artificial intelligence. It’s not one or the other, so don’t pick sides, there is no away team here: a properly built website covers both, because the models rely on good, structured SEO content to cite you.

And then? Smart features on the site

An AI-ready website doesn’t stop at being “readable”. It can also integrate smart features that serve the visitor: a chatbot answering customer questions 24/7, automations that reduce manual work, smart search. All of that sounds good, and it genuinely is good, with one condition. These features are built properly when the underlying infrastructure is organized and structured from the start. Otherwise you’re bolting a speedometer onto a cart.

I’m not talking theory here

This isn’t theory. In my own products I apply exactly these principles: MS-Property is a platform built with structured data and a smart assistant from the start, MS-Finance is designed so its structure allows machine analysis, and the support portal combines a chatbot with human control. That’s my way: whatever I recommend, I’ve tried first. If something can’t survive contact with my own tools, I have no business suggesting it for yours.

Why it matters

Building AI-ready today isn’t a luxury or a trend. It’s the difference between being found and recommended, or staying invisible as more and more customers ask artificial intelligence instead of searching themselves. And invisible, let’s be honest, never shows up in your analytics either. Two audiences became three. The third isn’t going anywhere.
