An online store that loads slowly loses customers before they even see the first product. Most visitors abandon a page that doesn’t appear within a few seconds - and Google knows it, which is why speed is a ranking factor through Core Web Vitals.
osyllektis.com, an eshop built on WordPress, had exactly this problem: its LCP (Largest Contentful Paint, the time until the main content appears) had been measured at close to 19 seconds on desktop. In practice, the page was invisible for longer than it takes a visitor to change their mind.
The challenge
In WordPress eshops the problem is rarely a single one. It’s usually an accumulation: product images uploaded at full resolution without compression, plugins loading scripts on every page whether needed or not, and a design carrying weight from choices made years ago.
The difficulty is that all of this has to be fixed on a live store, without losing content, without breaking orders, and without costly downtime.
The solution
I worked on three levels:
- Image optimization. Images are almost always the biggest culprit in an eshop’s LCP. They were converted to modern formats and proper dimensions, so the browser downloads what it actually needs rather than a multiple of it.
- Plugin changes. I evaluated what each plugin really offers relative to the weight it adds. Those that slowed loading down were replaced with lighter alternatives or removed.
- Redesign. The store’s look was redesigned with speed as a priority: less unnecessary weight, cleaner structure, a better experience for the visitor.
The result
LCP dropped from ~19 to ~4.4 seconds on desktop - the main content now appears more than 4 times faster. The store loads in a time frame where the visitor stays, sees the products and keeps browsing.
Speed is not just user experience. Core Web Vitals feed into Google rankings, and a fast site is a better foundation for SEO & GEO as well - both for classic search and for AI-powered answers.
Why it matters
Many WordPress sites and eshops carry years of accumulated weight. The good news: in most cases they don’t need to be rebuilt from scratch. With proper diagnosis and targeted interventions, the difference can be dramatic.
